Thinking about buying a projector from overseas in Europe, but am afraid because of the voltage difference. Irv Higdon told me once that even if I have a voltage conversion adapter, some of the components essential to the projector will not function properly.
Anybody ever buy a higher end model projector from overseas and use it here in the U.S.
Any info would be great.

Hi Scott!
Besides the voltage, the frequency is different in Europe (50 Hz). So, if you buy a projector with any frequency controled motors, they will run faster at 60 Hz in USA, as the frequency is NOT converted with voltage converters, only the voltage.
However, Hi-end models always have DC-motors in S8 (Elmo GS and ST, Beaulieu EL708, Bauer T502/525/610, Braun Visacustic 1000/2000 and can be used at 60 Hz, too. But you?ll need a power voltage converter with 300 VA or so. Some projectors (Bauer) just come with a voltage selector for world-wide use.
Models with AC motor that won?t run correctly in the USA, even if they had a voltage selector, are: Bauer T600/500/510 and all other smaller Bauers, ALL Eumig, even the high-end ones.
Hope this helps,
Pedro

It is worth checking, but a lot of machines that used synchronous motors and belt drive often had two pulley set ups for the different frequencies.
For the record, 16 2/3 Hz is sometimesused in steel mills and 40Hz and 25Hz were used on railways.

Thought I would check my Eumig 607D. It is set up for 200-250V at 50 Hz, but there is definitely a second pair of pulleys on the primary drive from the motor and the second drive pulley looks slightly smaller than the one in use, which makes senses for the difference in frequency generated speeds. It might take a bit of dismantling to change but is possible. It would also be worth checking the transformer taps as well. It might be there is a 110V input set up which is blanked off. If there is on the Eumig it is not obvious.
Feeling quite chuffed as the original reply was just an educated guess.

Rooting around in the loft I found the instruction book for the Eumig 607D and guess what? Instructions are included for moving the belt across pulleys to accomodate 60Hz, but no mention of using 110V.
